The Greenbelt Native Plant Center (GNPC) is a 13-acre plant material production facility located in Staten Island and administered by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, that provides native plants and seeds grown from local plant populations to parks and other public spaces in NYC. At GNPC, local species are collected as seed from wild populations, processed, cultivated, and harvested over a complex process that can last up to four years from seed to plant, passing through a sequence of the center’s various buildings and outdoor fields before being installed at sites across the five boroughs.
The purpose of this Building Conditions Assessment and Upgrade Master Plan was to provide a report of the current architectural, structural and mechanical conditions of Building 8 at GNPC, elucidate challenges and opportunities, and detail and then quantify the upgrades needed to transform Building 8 into a fully functional, sustainable state-of-the-art hub for New York City’s work in ecological restoration.
